I got hit by the retro-arcade bug, so I felt like making a beat ’em up using OpenBOR, a new engine I discovered recently.
About the New Beat ’em Up in OpenBOR
The story isn’t very clear yet (though that’s probably the least important part in this genre…), but what I can tell you is that the main character of this game is a girl named Isolda.
Her name “Isolda” means a strong and dominant warrior, which fits her personality perfectly.

The temporary title “Kicks of Rage” comes from the Muay Thai-style kicks Isolda uses to take down her enemies xd.
As for playable characters, there will be three: Isolda, Steven, and one more character I haven’t fully defined yet xd.
I hope to make each character feel distinct in gameplay, since each one will have their own combat specialty.
Game Modes
The gameplay system will be very similar to classic Arcade and Super Nintendo games.
There will be six (or eight) stages, including two difficulty modes: Free Mode and Arcade Mode (with Free Mode having no story).
An extra level (Boss Rush) will be unlockable, where players who beat the game can really test their skills.
Graphics
I’ve been using sprite rips extracted from the “Service Mode” of various arcade ROMs, especially from Ghost Chaser Densei (Denjin Makai) and several classic beat ’em ups, along with other games in the genre.
Here are a couple of images showing my current progress:

The goal of this new beat ’em up in OpenBOR is to replicate the style of those classic Capcom arcade games.
I’d also like to thank The Spriters Resource, Sprite Database, and Video Game Maps for their sprite libraries, which have been really helpful for this project 😀
I still need to polish details like sounds, animations, and more, so I’ll also keep working on the story and a final title for the game.
I hope to have a playable demo ready soon, so stay tuned to the blog.
